Young people can play an important role in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by bringing together society as a whole and stakeholder groups.

On 25 March 2025, six organisations – the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)—published a joint guidance note for education policymakers and professionals working in schools.

This note highlights the essential role that schools play in combating antimicrobial resistance and presents actions to be considered by policymakers and education practitioners. By implementing the strategies outlined in this document, schools can make a significant contribution to preventing and mitigating the development and spread of AMR, while promoting overall health and well-being within school communities.
