Antibiotic resistance: the European Union is struggling to meet its 2030 targets

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has published its annual report as part of European Antibiotic Awareness Day. The report highlights how far the EU is from achieving its 2030 targets for combating AMR. Between 2019 and 2023, the EU saw a 1% increase in antibiotic consumption, whereas the target set is for a 20% reduction by 2030 compared to 2019. In addition, an increase in the consumption of critical ATBs listed by the WHO has also been noted, with a rise of 0.4% between 2019 and 2023.
