A Post-doctoral Research Fellowship (BIPD) (Reference REQUIMTE 2022-27) on the project NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000052, “Healthy&ValorFOOD – Towards healthy and valorized foods, assuring their safety, authenticity and sustainability”, supported by European Union (FEDER funds through the Programa Operacional Regional do Norte – NORTE2020), is available at REQUIMTE.

Admission requirements: The prospective candidates must hold a PhD in Bioinformatics and Computer Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences (specialty in Microbiology), Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution or related areas, obtained in the previous three years to the date of submission of the application.

Candidates should have knowledge, relevant scientific production, and experience in the analysis of bacterial genomes and metagenomics data obtained from different sources including food, development of methodologies and/or large-scale data analysis (e.g. pangenomic and phylogenetic analyses). Additionally, ability to program in scripting languages (R and/or Python, PERL and other languages), proficiency in LINUX operating systems and knowledge in statistical analysis will be valued.

Experience in supervising PhD, Masters and/or Undergraduate students will be considered an advantage. Candidates must have good knowledge of spoken and written English, show enthusiasm for scientific research, good organizational skills, team spirit, autonomy, critical thinking, interest in integrating multidisciplinary teams and be immediately available.

In case the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of October 12th, and all formalities established therein must be complied until the signature of the contract.

Workplan: The grant holder must develop experimental work in the field of Bacteriology, with special focus on the application of genomic and metagenomic analyses to rapidly elucidate the presence of antibiotic and biocide resistant bacteria in food and their transmission routes within the food-chain.

Workplace: The work will be conducted at Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade do Porto, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Luísa Peixe, Dr. Teresa Gonçalves Ribeiro and Prof. Dr. Carla Novais.

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have duration of 12 months, expected to start on 01/07/2022.

Monthly stipend: Monthly stipend is €1686 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).

Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

Selection criteria:

1. Overall scientific coherence of the CV (10%)
2. Quality of publications in metagenomic and genomic analysis for the identification and characterization of bacteria and their impact on academic, industrial and social communities (30%)
3. Experience in programming in scripting language in R and/or Python, PERL, other languages ​​and proficiency in LINUX operating systems, and its usefulness within the scope of the work to be developed (30%)
4. Knowledge and experience in statistical analysis (20%)
5. Student orientation (5%)
6. Projects participation (5%)

In order to analyse the candidates’ motivations, expectations and capabilities, the three best-ranked candidates in the six previous assessment items will be notified (by email) for an interview. The final classification is composed of: 70% based on the curricular and scientific path evaluation and 30% based on the interview.

The jury reserves the right not to select any candidate if it considers that none of the candidates has the appropriate profile for the proper execution of the work plan.
