Antimicrobial resistance arises when the organisms that cause infection evolve ways to survive treatment. Once standard treatments are ineffective, it is easier for infections to persist and spread. These resistant organisms can be found in people, animals, food and the environment. The rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance are creating a new generation of \u2018superbugs\u2019 that cannot be treated with existing medicines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Drug-resistant bacteria infect over 50m people worldwide killing over 700,000 people each year. Without effective antibiotics, even minor surgery and routine operations could become high-risk procedures if serious infections can\u2019t be treated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
