{"id":19279,"date":"2021-12-14T11:35:39","date_gmt":"2021-12-14T10:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ppr-antibioresistance.inserm.fr\/?p=19279"},"modified":"2021-12-14T11:35:42","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T10:35:42","slug":"new-partnership-to-combat-antimicrobial-resistance-in-gonorrhoea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ppr-antibioresistance.inserm.fr\/en\/info-communication\/news\/new-partnership-to-combat-antimicrobial-resistance-in-gonorrhoea\/","title":{"rendered":"New partnership to combat antimicrobial resistance in gonorrhoea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Article published on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/08-12-2021-new-partnership-to-combat-antimicrobial-resistance-in-gonorrhoea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organization website<\/a> on December 08, 2021<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has awarded funding to nearly 30 organizations to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and other healthcare threats through the establishment of 2 new networks: the Global Action in Healthcare Network (GAIHN) and the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory and Response Network (Global AR Lab &amp; Response Network).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With funding from this initiative, WHO will enhance the national, regional and global understanding of epidemiology and AMR in\u00a0<em>Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/em>\u00a0(<em>N. gonorrhoeae<\/em>). In partnership with WHO collaborating centres\u00a0<em>(1-3)<\/em>, the WHO Department of Global HIV, Hepatitis and STI Programmes will strengthen surveillance of AMR in<em>\u00a0N. gonorrhoeae<\/em>\u00a0by coordinating, consolidating and expanding the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/initiatives\/gonococcal-antimicrobial-surveillance-programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enhanced Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Program (EGASP)<\/a>\u00a0at the global level within the Global AMR Surveillance System framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO launched EGASP to generate high quality and representative gonococcal AMR data. The initial implementation in Thailand and the Philippines proved that EGASP is a sustainable methodology in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this partnership, the project will expand EGASP globally by supporting implementation in 10 additional LMICs that have a high burden of&nbsp;<em>N. gonorrhoeae<\/em>&nbsp;and are at risk for the development of AMR. The project will further strengthen EGASP\u2019s reach in the 2 early adopter countries of the methodology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO will also implement new methods of molecular surveillance and AMR in&nbsp;<em>N. gonorrhoeae<\/em>&nbsp;isolates using whole genome sequencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWHO welcomes this news,\u201d said Meg Doherty, Director of WHO\u2019s Global HIV, Hepatitis and STI Programmes. \u201cWe need to monitor for and work proactively to reduce the development of AMR in&nbsp;<em>N. gonorrhoeae<\/em>&nbsp;around the world if we hope to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of controlling sexually transmitted infections by 2030 \u2013 this also means acting on this data to ensure no one suffers from untreatable gonorrhoea.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>N. gonorrhoeae<\/em>&nbsp;is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection and results in substantial morbidity and economic costs worldwide. WHO estimates that there are 82.4 million new cases of gonorrhoea among adults and adolescents (15\u201349 years old) each year.
