Offer description

We are announcing a 65% position as PhD candidate (m/f/d) in the field of antimicrobial resistance research.

The position is offered for 3 years.

The Borstel Research Center is an internationally renowned research institute with 550 employees, financed by the Federal Government and the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Our central task is research and patient care in the field of respiratory diseases.

We operate both basic research infrastructures and a medical clinic. Our goal is to improve existing methods for the detection, prevention and treatment of lung diseases and to develop new, innovative therapeutic approaches.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Infections with antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria are a major public health burden. Annually increasing numbers of AMR related deaths reflect the inability of current treatment practices to counteract on rapid bacterial evolution and inevitable adaptations leading to resistance against existing and new antibiotics.

The PhD project will explore novel in vitro approaches to reverse existing antimicrobial resistances in model organisms such as Mycobacterium bovis BCG vaccine strain or Haemophilus influenzae under biosafety level 2 conditions.

The envisaged project can further be complemented with metagenomic analysis of patient specimens for the presence of AMR genes. The PhD student will combine classical microbiological experiments, knowledge of molecular AMR mechanisms, and next generation sequencing based microbial genomics.
